The Fallen Tower
Old Man Coyote
Old Man Coyote is a trickster, less intellectual than Raven but cunning as hell. Perched somewhere between Wile E. Coyote and the darker figure of traditional lore, Old Man Coyote is a shape-changing survivor who never lets apparent disadvantages slow him down. Real-life coyotes thrive in bad circumstances, and so do Old Man Coyote’s chosen folk. Raggedly seductive, Old Man Coyote often sees his plans backfire in his face, yet he never stops looking for the next successful scheme.
Old Man Coyote is also viewed as a respected benefactor of humans, responsible for such important deeds as bringing fire to the people, teaching them the arts of civilization, and helping to shape the world for their benefit. Among the Shoshone, Bannock, and Paiute tribes, Coyote is the younger brother of the respected creator god Wolf, and although he is an irresponsible and socially inappropriate character, he also assists his brother in his important tasks.
He often manifests as a Native American brave dressed in black buckskins with red woodpecker feathers down his leggings and sleeves, and coyote skin as a headdress.
